Mr Flynn, who represented himself, claimed damages for an injury to his right index finger while working as a fisherman off Kinsale, Co Cork.

Laurence Flynn has been refused leave to appeal to the Supreme Court in his case against Finbarr Desmond, in a determination delivered on 1 October 2015.

Mr Flynn claimed damages for an injury to his right index finger in September or October 2004. He was working for Mr Desmond as a fisherman on the vessel Bonne Chance off Kinsale, Co Cork.

On 21 November 2012, the High Court found the case had been settled by an agreement of 12 November 2009. Under it, Mr Flynn was to be paid €5,000, later increased to €5,500.

Mr Flynn appealed, and the Court of Appeal upheld the High Court's findings in a judgment delivered on 26 February 2015.

He then asked the Supreme Court for leave to appeal against the whole decision. The court said it had borne in mind that he was a lay litigant.

The Supreme Court said it is not an appellate court to correct error. It found no matter of general public importance, and no need for an appeal in the interests of justice.
