A childminder from Cavan is to stand trial for a second time at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court next May on a charge of intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to a ten-month-old baby in March 2012. Sandra Higgins, aged 34, of The Beeches, Drumgola Wood, Cavan town, denies the allegation. A previous jury trial concluded last month without reaching a verdict. The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that a new trial proceed. The court heard that scheduling expert medical witnesses presented difficulties, and May was agreed as a suitable timeframe by all parties. Judge Martin Nolan fixed the trial date for 25 May 2016, with liberty reserved to re-mention the matter should witness issues arise. Ms Higgins, who remains on bail, attended the hearing.
