Judge Desmond Hogan retires after 15 years on the Bench

Judge Desmond Hogan of the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court retired today after fifteen years on the bench. The Athlone-based judge's final sitting was marked by tributes from members of the judiciary, legal professions, and courts service staff. During his remarks, Judge Hogan reflected on the fairness of the State's justice system and praised the work of An Garda Síochána, the legal professions, and the Probation Service. He qualified as a solicitor in 1969 and practiced in Dublin before relocating to the midlands, where he maintained a general practice until his appointment to the District Court in 1989. His tenure included the sentencing of sex offender Anthony Lyons in 2010, which was subsequently appealed by the Director of Public Prosecutions and found unduly lenient by the Court of Criminal Appeal in 2014. Judge Hogan said he looked forward to his retirement without the constraints of judicial office.
