5 of Ireland’s Dumbest Crimes

A man pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to making a false report concerning explosives at an Intel facility in County Kildare on January 13th, 2015. The defendant, aged 20 and from Balbriggan in County Dublin, had arranged for an accomplice to telephone emergency services claiming bombs would detonate within twelve hours. The hoax call resulted in significant disruption, including motorway closures and suspension of operations at the manufacturing plant, affecting thousands of workers and costing the facility approximately six thousand hours of production. The defendant was sentenced to two hundred hours of community service in lieu of a two-year custodial sentence. His accomplice, also aged 21 and from Balbriggan, received an identical sentence. Both men pleaded guilty and had no previous convictions. The sentencing judge remarked that the scheme represented a profoundly misguided attempt to avoid work.
