A 55-year-old Mayo man has been sentenced to three years imprisonment, with the final year suspended, following his conviction on seven counts of indecent assault against two of his sisters committed between 1977 and 1984. The Central Criminal Court sitting in Castlebar heard that the assaults occurred when the victims were aged between 15 and 22 years old. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was convicted by jury in July. Mr Justice Tony Hunt imposed concurrent sentences ranging from three months to three years, suspending the final year on condition that no further sexual offence is committed. The judge noted that while the offending may be at the lower end of the spectrum, considerable harm had been caused to the victims. The man will be subject to the sex offenders register. The complaints were made to gardaí in 2011, approximately three decades after the alleged incidents occurred.
