A former solicitor from County Mayo has been sentenced to one year in prison at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for stealing €260,000 from her clients between February 2008 and January 2011. Jacqueline Durcan, aged 47, pleaded guilty to a single count of theft from mixed client deposit accounts. Judge Patricia Ryan imposed the custodial sentence, noting the serious breach of professional trust, the sustained nature of the offending, and the substantial sum involved as aggravating factors. The court heard Durcan, who ran Durcan Solicitors in Castlebar, made the thefts whilst facing severe financial pressures from property investments. Most funds were redirected into the family practice, with €51,000 applied towards her home purchase. The Law Society paid out €206,184 in compensation claims. Durcan has since made reparations and was struck off the roll. She has since relocated to Belgium.
