At the Central Criminal Court, Michael McCarville, aged 49, from Longfield, Lisboduff, Cootehill, County Cavan, has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for the sexual abuse of seven siblings over an 18-year period beginning in 1982. McCarville pleaded guilty in December to 52 sample charges including rape and indecent assault, arising from a total of 187 counts. The offences occurred on a family farm where he worked as a labourer, with victims aged between seven and thirteen at the time of initial abuse. The attacks continued until 1999 and took place in various locations including farm buildings and the family home. During sentencing at the Central Criminal Court, Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy noted the seriousness of the crimes, describing them as a grave breach of trust, though he credited the guilty plea. Five of the seven adult victims presented impact statements to the court. McCarville has been ordered to complete five years post-release supervision following his sentence.
