At the Court of Appeal on 23 March 2017, a woman serving a life sentence for murder had her conviction appeal dismissed. Sabrina Cummins, with an address in Dublin, had been found guilty by jury at the Central Criminal Court of murdering Thomas Horan at a Ringsend location on 6 January 2014. She was sentenced to mandatory life imprisonment in November 2015. Her appeal challenged the trial judge's conduct after she declined to continue giving evidence during cross-examination. Mr Justice George Birmingham ruled that the trial judge was entitled to seek to prevent conduct that would damage the administration of justice, and that his comments were designed to protect trial integrity. The court rejected all substantive grounds of appeal and found no points undermined the verdict. The judgment noted a recent probation report as positive in tone.
