The parents of Natalie McGuinness, a 23-year-old from Sligo, addressed the Central Criminal Court on 17 July following the case of Oisín Conroy, who was found not guilty of her murder by reason of insanity. Ms McGuinness was strangled to death on 28 October 2015 at The Mews, Mail Coach Road, Sligo. Conroy, aged 34, with an address in Boyle, County Roscommon, was committed to the Central Mental Hospital following a jury verdict on 7 July. During proceedings, a consultant forensic psychiatrist gave evidence that Conroy suffers from chronic paranoid schizophrenia and remains only partially treated. Victim impact statements were delivered by Ms McGuinness's mother and sister, describing the profound and ongoing impact of her loss on the family. Mr Justice Tony Hunt made an order committing Conroy to the Central Mental Hospital for inpatient care and treatment, noting he requires close supervision for the foreseeable future.
