"Shocking depravity": man gets 14-year sentence for repeated rape of children

A 46-year-old Mayo man has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment at the Central Criminal Court following his guilty pleas to 31 counts of rape involving two victims. He pleaded guilty to 20 counts of oral and anal rape of a boy between August 1997 and April 2008, and 11 counts of raping his own daughter from mid-2007 over two years. Mr Justice Tony Hunt imposed a headline sentence of 19 years, reduced to 14 years in recognition of the guilty pleas, which spared the victims from giving evidence at trial. The judge described the offences as of shocking depravity. The man was ordered to undergo post-release supervision for three years. Both victims provided impact statements detailing long-term psychological harm. The court heard the accused groomed the first victim over years of systematic abuse, while exerting total control over his daughter through threats and intimidation. The man cannot be named to protect the victims' identities.
