Victim left deaf in one ear after being attacked by schoolmate in "fit of jealousy"

An apprentice electrician pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to causing serious harm to a schoolmate at a nightclub in the capital on 3 July 2016. The 20-year-old man from Ardara Avenue, Donaghmede, struck his victim twice during an altercation that occurred after witnessing him kiss a girl both knew. The victim lost consciousness when his head struck the ground and was hospitalised for five days, suffering a scalp laceration and dizziness. He has since been left permanently deaf in his left ear and experiences tinnitus, requiring ongoing medical care. The assault has significantly impacted his education, employment prospects, and ability to participate in sports. The court heard the defendant demonstrated remorse following his initial arrest, visiting his victim in hospital and later submitting character references and a psychological report. Judge Melanie Greally adjourned sentencing to 2 November and remanded the accused on continuing bail. No previous convictions were recorded.
