A man has pleaded guilty before the Special Criminal Court to impeding the apprehension or prosecution of a former murder accused who became a State witness. Frank Murphy, aged fifty-eight, of Bettystown, County Meath, admitted to committing an act to obstruct the apprehension or prosecution of David Cullen, knowing or believing him guilty of unlawful firearms possession on March 6, 2013. Cullen was originally charged with the murder of Peter Butterly, aged thirty-five, who was fatally shot outside the Huntsman Inn in Gormanston that afternoon. Cullen later pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a semi-automatic pistol and became a State witness. Murphy had originally pleaded not guilty to the murder charge itself and to related firearms possession counts, but prosecutors indicated they would not proceed with those counts. The three-judge court remanded Murphy in custody pending sentencing on January 28, 2019, alongside his former co-accused Michael McDermott, who recently pleaded guilty to assisting an unlawful organisation in committing the murder.
