A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a dissident republican near Gormanston, County Meath in 2013. Kevin Braney, aged 44, was convicted by the Special Criminal Court of the premeditated killing of Peter Butterly, who was shot dead outside The Huntsman Inn on 6 March 2013. The three-judge court found that Braney organised and planned the murder beyond reasonable doubt. Evidence presented during the eleven-week trial indicated Braney attended a meeting at a flat in Balbriggan the night before the shooting, where he discussed how the killing would be carried out. The court also considered significant his presence at a subsequent meeting at a restaurant in Charlestown Shopping Centre. Butterly's widow delivered an impact statement describing the devastating effect on her family. Three other men have previously received life sentences for the murder. Braney's sentence was backdated to September 2017.
