At the High Court in Dublin, counsel for a Monaghan haulier argued that many offences alleged against him in connection with 39 migrant deaths occurred outside UK territory. Ronan Hughes, aged 40, of Tyholland, County Monaghan, faces 39 counts of manslaughter and one count of conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration following the discovery of bodies in a container lorry in Essex in October 2019. The State's counsel submitted that arguments regarding extraterritoriality were baseless and that the court should focus on the substance of the European Arrest Warrant rather than jurisdictional technicalities. The charge alleges Mr Hughes organised travel and controlled drivers who collected the migrants. Justice Paul Burns remanded him in custody pending judgment on 12 June. The case arises from the deaths of Vietnamese nationals found sealed in a trailer in Grays, Essex, on 23 October 2019.
