A man convicted of manslaughter following the death of his mother in Castlebar, County Mayo, in 2011 appeared for sentence at the Central Criminal Court on 8 February 2021. The defendant, aged 29, fatally stabbed his mother on 9 March 2011 at their home in Derrycrieve, Islandeady. He was initially convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2014, but the Supreme Court quashed that conviction in December 2019, finding the trial judge's instruction to the jury on intoxication inadequate. The Director of Public Prosecutions subsequently accepted his plea to manslaughter on the basis that gross intoxication prevented formation of intent to kill. During the hearing, the court was informed that the defendant faces potential homelessness upon release, with probation services unable to offer suitable accommodation. His counsel submitted that drug-related brain injury and extreme intoxication were relevant factors, whilst prosecutors assessed the case within the high culpability range for manslaughter.
