Lidl Ireland has commenced defamation proceedings in the High Court against the Irish Farmers Association, its President Tim Cullinan, and Vice-President Brian Rushe. The supermarket chain contests allegations published by the IFA in recent weeks claiming that its own-brand milk is not Irish and that it has engaged in misleading practices. Lidl seeks an injunction under the Defamation Act 2009 to prohibit publication of such statements pending full resolution of the dispute. The company states that its one-litre milk, packaged in Sligo, is sourced from Arrabawn in County Donegal, whilst larger cartons are supplied by Strathroy in Northern Ireland, sourcing Irish milk. Lidl rejects claims it created a fake dairy through its Coolree Creamery brand, describing this as a registered trademark. The company says it has requested the IFA withdraw the statements without success. Mr Justice Senan Allen adjourned proceedings to April following the Easter vacation.
