Pair made false injury claim after reversing into off-duty garda

A man and woman pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to making false personal injury claims following a car accident on Griffith Avenue in May 2019. Rene Cifra reversed his vehicle into a van driven by an off-duty garda whilst attempting to locate a delivery address fifteen minutes into his employment. Following a €650 insurance settlement, Cifra subsequently filed a fraudulent injury claim with Liberty Insurance, falsely stating his wife Olga Cifrova had been a passenger and sustained injuries. Both defendants, with an address in Ashtown, Dublin, attended a Cavan doctor seeking medical documentation to support their fabricated claims. The false claims were made between August 2019 and January 2020. When questioned by gardaí, Cifrova provided a sketch of the incident that contradicted the actual circumstances. Both later admitted to fabricating the claims. Judge Karen O'Connor adjourned sentencing to July 27, pending a probation report.
