A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to seven years in prison at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court following his conviction for a series of violent offences committed while on bail. The defendant, formerly of Sandyford in Dublin, pleaded guilty to the attempted robbery of a taxi driver in September 2019 and to robbery and attempted robbery at St Stephen's Green in August 2021. During the latter incident, he falsely claimed to be a member of An Garda Síochána and attacked a young man and his teenage companion, inflicting significant injuries including broken teeth and lacerations. The court heard the defendant has 65 previous convictions for robbery, burglary and assault. The judge characterised both attacks as vicious and noted the lasting psychological impact on the victims. In mitigation, the court considered the defendant's traumatic background, including loss of a parent in childhood and subsequent State care placement in Monaghan, alongside his documented drug addiction. The sentence was backdated to March of the previous year and includes a suspended final year conditional on engagement with rehabilitation services.
