A surveillance garda told the Special Criminal Court that he observed Gerard Hutch and former Sinn Féin councillor Jonathan Dowdall meeting with a man later apprehended with three AK-47 assault rifles used in the February 2016 Regency Hotel murder of David Byrne. The National Surveillance Unit officer testified that on 20 February in the Killygordon area of County Donegal, he saw Dowdall and Hutch as passengers in a vehicle that reversed into a parking space at Forest Park, where they met Shane Rowan. The witness described observing Dowdall place a black holdall bag into his Toyota Land Cruiser before Hutch entered the vehicle. A further NSU officer stated he witnessed what he believed to be Patrick Hutch Senior travelling in convoy with Rowan on 9 March, shortly before Rowan was intercepted driving a Vauxhall Insignia containing the three rifles and ammunition. Rowan was subsequently jailed for seven and a half years in July 2016. Hutch, of Clontarf, Dublin, denies murdering Byrne.
