A man from Co Roscommon has had his prison sentence reduced by two years following an appeal at the Court of Appeal. The 76-year-old was convicted in June 2021 of sexually assaulting his partner's daughter between 1998 and 1999, including two counts of oral rape. He was originally sentenced to ten years' imprisonment with the final year suspended. The Court of Appeal dismissed his conviction appeal but found his age warranted sentence mitigation. Mr Justice John Edwards re-sentenced him to nine years' imprisonment with the final two years suspended, having initially set a headline sentence of twelve years before applying a three-year discount. The appellant's legal representatives had argued there was a significant prospect he could die in prison given his age. The victim, who waived anonymity, described the lifelong impact of the abuse on her wellbeing and family relationships.
