Jonathan Dowdall, a former Sinn Féin councillor, has given evidence at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin against his former co-accused Gerard "The Monk" Hutch, who denies the murder of Kinahan cartel member David Byrne during a boxing weigh-in at the Regency Hotel on 5 February 2016. Dowdall testified that Hutch told him he and another man, identified as "Mago" Gately, had shot Byrne. The witness stated that Hutch expressed unhappiness about the killing. Dowdall also gave detailed evidence about his involvement in attempted mediation of the Hutch-Kinahan feud, including meetings in County Tyrone with republican contacts in January and February 2016. He described assisting with a hotel room booking at the Regency shortly before the shooting. Hutch, aged 59, of Clontarf, Dublin, faces trial before a three-judge panel at the non-jury court on Parkgate Street.
