Garda identified defendant as attacker at Strokestown eviction farm

At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, a detective garda from Donegal testified that he identified one of four defendants as an attacker during a siege at a repossessed property near Strokestown, County Roscommon, on 16 December 2018. Detective Garda Enda Jennings, stationed in Ramelton, said he recognised the man in photograph six from a garda bulletin circulated after the incident, and later confirmed his identification by viewing body-camera footage on a computer at Letterkenny Garda Station in February 2019. The witness stated the defendant lived less than a mile from his home in the small town. Under cross-examination, defence counsel highlighted that formal identification protocols for gardaí were not introduced until February 2023, and that no second garda witnessed the identification or took contemporaneous notes. Patrick Sweeney, aged 44, of High Cairn, Ramelton, together with three other men, has pleaded not guilty to 17 charges each, including false imprisonment, assault, aggravated burglary, arson, and violent disorder.
