A man with a criminal history has been sentenced to three years and six months imprisonment by the Special Criminal Court for money laundering offences. Gerard Mackin pleaded guilty to handling €4,780 in cash that prosecutors alleged were the proceeds of crime, along with two mobile phones discovered at his address in Limerick on 17 April 2019. Mr Justice Tony Hunt stated that the handling occurred within a context of serious organised criminality in the Limerick area. Although the sum was described as falling at the lower end of the financial scale, the judge considered the circumstances and Mackin's previous conviction for assault causing harm as relevant factors. The sentence was reduced from four years and eight months to account for his early guilty plea and cooperation during garda interviews. Mackin was extradited from Spain in December 2022 following a European Arrest Warrant and has remained in custody since his arrest. The sentence was backdated to 5 December 2022.
