Date set for James Kilroy's third murder trial

A 50-year-old man from County Mayo will face trial for a third time in connection with the alleged murder of his wife. At the Central Criminal Court on Tuesday, the defence team indicated they require a replacement expert witness following the collapse of the second trial last week. Justice Paul McDermott set the trial date for 29 May 2024. The previous proceedings had progressed for two weeks before halting due to the unavailability of the expert witness. The man, from Kilbree Lower, Westport, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the charge of murdering an occupational therapist at their rural home between 13 and 14 June 2019. The prosecution has outlined that the victim sustained injuries consistent with strangulation, blunt force trauma to the head, and a stab wound to the neck.
