Dean Caffrey, aged 38 and from Drumcondra in Dublin, has been sentenced to eight years' imprisonment following his conviction for manslaughter at the Central Criminal Court. The offence arose from the death of Sean McCarthy, a 28-year-old man, on 2 August 2022. Mr Justice Paul McDermott imposed a nine-year custodial term with the final twelve months suspended. A jury returned a majority verdict of guilty to manslaughter after more than twelve hours of deliberation across three days. Caffrey had pleaded not guilty to murder, and the jury accepted his account that the fatal shooting occurred during a struggle, rather than as a deliberate act. The circumstances revealed that Caffrey, who had struggled with cocaine dependency since 2016 and cannabis use, had allowed McCarthy to store drugs at his apartment as a means of managing accumulated narcotics debts. On the day in question, Caffrey told gardaí that McCarthy arrived at the property in an agitated state, armed and making threats over a suspected heroin-related theft. During an ensuing confrontation, Caffrey claimed the firearm discharged fatally with a single shot to McCarthy's head. What followed demonstrated a calculated effort to conceal the killing. Caffrey placed McCarthy's body inside a wardrobe at the apartment, where it remained undisturbed for four days while he maintained his ordinary routine. He subsequently disposed of the weapon in the River Tolka near his residence and used McCarthy's mobile telephone to create the false impression that the deceased remained alive. Caffrey also made enquiries about renting a storage unit in the immediate aftermath. When interviewed, Caffrey eventually directed gardaí to the wardrobe where McCarthy's remains were recovered. In sentencing, Mr Justice McDermott found that Caffrey's conduct following the killing demonstrated an absence of genuine remorse. The judge rejected submissions for leniency founded on his long-standing drug addiction, concluding that such circumstances did not warrant a reduction in the severity of the penalty imposed.
