A migrant worker has vowed to appeal after the Workplace Relations Commission dismissed his discrimination complaint against the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage regarding the Local Authority Home Loan Scheme. Aloke Tirawy alleged he faced unlawful discrimination based on his non-EU nationality when Mayo County Council and Meath County Council rejected three mortgage applications in 2024. Though Mr Tirawy met eligibility criteria including a five-year residency requirement, the Housing Agency declined his applications citing a 2023 credit policy not publicly available. Adjudicator Brian Dolan ruled the complaint was misdirected, finding the local authorities rather than the Housing Agency were the service providers and therefore the proper respondents. Mr Dolan expressed sympathy with arguments that the Department's approach fragmented accountability, but concluded the complaints were not well-founded on procedural grounds. Mr Tirawy's solicitor has indicated an intention to pursue the matter further through the courts.
