"Self-proclaimed pillar of society" sexually abused five-year-old girl

An eighty-nine-year-old man from Rockfield, Knock, County Mayo has pleaded guilty to five counts of sexual assault against a young child in the mid-1990s. The Central Criminal Court heard that the offences occurred at his home between January and June 1995 when the victim was five years old. The man, who has no previous convictions, admitted the charges following a disclosure made by the victim to family members decades later. The victim attended Claremorris Garda Station and provided a detailed account to investigating gardaí. During proceedings, the court heard an emotional victim impact statement describing the lasting psychological trauma caused by the abuse. Justice Caroline Biggs adjourned sentencing to allow time for consideration of all materials, noting the victim's statement as particularly significant. Medical reports indicating the defendant's serious health conditions were also submitted to the court for consideration during sentencing.
