A man convicted of subjecting his partner to a sustained campaign of violence, rape and psychological control in Killybegs, County Donegal, will remain in prison after the Court of Appeal rejected his appeal against conviction in December 2025. Dean Ward, aged 38 and formerly of County Wexford, was found guilty in June 2022 of twelve offences committed between June and July 2019. The offences included four assaults, false imprisonment, threats to kill, rape and coercive control. He received a sentence of seventeen years imprisonment, with the final year suspended. Ward initiated contact with the woman through an online dating site in May 2019 before moving into her home in Killybegs. Over the subsequent six-week period, he subjected her to violence, sexual assault and extensive control over her finances and movements. A jury determined that her apparent consent to sexual intercourse had been obtained through fear and force. On appeal, Ward's legal team argued that evidence presented at trial regarding previous threats to kill and financial control unfairly prejudiced proceedings. They contended the jury should have been discharged. Mr Justice John Edwards rejected these submissions, finding the evidence was relevant and probative to establishing the woman's state of mind and demonstrating the pattern of coercive control. The trial judge had acted correctly in declining to discharge the jury. Ward maintains his innocence and does not accept the jury verdict. He carries nine previous convictions, including an earlier false imprisonment conviction. The case reflects ongoing judicial scrutiny of coercive control offences. The victim delivered a statement to the court describing the profound impact of the offences on her wellbeing, characterising the period as fundamentally transformative of her life.
