Masked home invader who repeatedly raped elderly neighbour gets 13 years

Shane Kelly, aged thirty-six and of no fixed abode, has been sentenced to thirteen years' imprisonment at the Central Criminal Court for a violent home invasion and sexual assault on an elderly neighbour in Edgeworthstown, County Longford. Kelly pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted rape, one count of oral rape, one count of anal rape, and burglary following an attack in the early hours of February twenty-fifth, 2025. The victim, a seventy-year-old woman who had returned to Ireland to retire after a career in finance in the United States, was subjected to a particularly brutal assault in her home. Justice Melanie Greally imposed a headline sentence of eighteen years, which was reduced to fourteen and a half years to account for mitigating factors. The final eighteen months of that reduced sentence was suspended on conditions. In her remarks, Justice Greally found Kelly's culpability to be of an exceptionally high degree and stated that the harm inflicted on the victim was fundamentally life-altering across all dimensions of her wellbeing. The court was informed that a probation assessment evaluated Kelly as presenting a medium risk of further offending and identified serious concerns regarding sexual preoccupation, poor impulse control, and substance abuse issues requiring targeted intervention.
