Mayo man hit brother with shovel in protracted family dispute

A 47-year-old man from Swinford has pleaded guilty to assault causing harm following an incident in which he struck his brother with a shovel at their home in Cloongullaune on 27 July 2022. The victim was rendered unconscious and transported to Mayo University Hospital with a head injury, where imaging revealed fluid on the brain. He was discharged after three days but has since reported ongoing physical and psychological effects, including headaches, vision problems and sleep disturbance. In a victim impact statement, he expressed fear for his safety. At Castlebar Circuit Court, Judge Eoin Garavan noted the incident emerged from a longstanding fractured family relationship and remarked that the injury could have been fatal. The defendant, who carries previous convictions including threats to cause serious harm, has not engaged with gardaí since this offence. Sentencing has been adjourned pending the conclusion of related cases involving other family members. The case returns to court on 23 July.
