A 40-year-old man from Castlerea, County Roscommon, has withdrawn an appeal against his 15-month custodial sentence imposed for a series of thefts from retail outlets. Owen Maughan was convicted in the District Court of twelve theft charges committed between July 2024 and April 2025. He targeted the same Aldi store in Dublin on seven separate occasions, stealing approximately €1,498 worth of alcohol, groceries and meat products. He also committed thefts from other retailers including Lidl, Penneys and Centra. The District Court Appeals Court heard that Maughan has 54 previous convictions. A defence solicitor outlined his client's struggles with substance addictions but acknowledged no supporting documentation regarding his conduct in custody was available. Judge Martina Baxter noted the prolific nature of his repeated offending at the same location. Upon withdrawal of the appeal, the judge affirmed the original District Court sentence.
