Prison for abuser who sexually assaulted younger sister six decades ago

A 79-year-old man from Mullingar, County Westmeath, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment at the Central Criminal Court following his guilty plea to eight counts of indecent assault against his younger sister between 1962 and 1963. The offences occurred when the defendant was aged 15 to 16 and his sister was between 10 and 11 years old. Mr Justice Kerida Naidoo imposed consecutive sentences, noting the abuse constituted a deliberate exploitation of a much younger child over an extended period. The judge acknowledged legal restrictions limiting the available penalty, as sentencing was governed by laws in force at the time of the offences. The complainant, now 74, did not attend court but waived her right to anonymity through her legal representatives. In delivering sentence, the judge recognised the serious and persistent impact on the victim throughout her lifetime and expressed hope the outcome would bring her finality.
