A 23-year-old Carlow woman may avoid imprisonment through community service following her guilty plea to money laundering charges at Carlow Circuit Criminal Court. Dion Timmons of Graiguecullen admitted to handling proceeds of crime when her bank account was used to facilitate a social welfare fraud originating in Letterkenny, Donegal. Between April 2022, approximately €12,000 was deposited into her account across 23 transactions within a four-week period. The court heard Timmons was approached while a college student and asked to provide her account details, having been told no crime was involved. Judge Mary Morrissey imposed a headline sentence of 24 months before reducing it to 16 months, taking into account Timmons' guilty plea, remorse, clean record, and positive probation assessment. The judge adjourned proceedings to allow the Probation Service to assess suitability for community service. Should Timmons be deemed suitable, she will undertake 80 hours community service in lieu of imprisonment.
