A woman residing at a Peter McVerry Trust housing unit on Tone Street, Ballina, has given evidence at the Central Criminal Court describing how she and her son fled the apartment after the accused man forced his way inside and made unwanted sexual advances. The witness said she experienced "absolute dread" when Liam O'Leary, aged 33, refused to leave despite repeated demands from herself, her son, and the deceased John Casserly. She observed Mr Casserly, aged 58, holding a metal pole as she escaped with her son and their dog. Mr O'Leary has pleaded not guilty to murder. The prosecution alleges Mr Casserly was killed between 23 and 24 October 2024, having sustained 27 stab wounds and severe blunt force injuries. Additional evidence heard included testimony from staff at Men's Aid regarding a call received from Mr O'Leary that day, during which he expressed suicidal thoughts and anger. The trial continues before Ms Justice Melanie Greally and a jury.
