A jury has been discharged in the trial of a 33-year-old man accused of murdering a 58-year-old at a housing unit on Tone Street in Ballina, County Mayo in October 2024. The Central Criminal Court heard that the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge. The trial, which began eight days prior, was halted by Justice Melanie Greally due to what she described as an "unfortunate situation" that prevented proceedings from continuing. The judge thanked jurors for their service in what she characterised as a deeply disturbing trial and excused them from further jury duty for five years. The case is listed for mention on 15 April. During opening statements, the prosecution outlined that the victim sustained fatal injuries described as inflicted with extreme violence, and detailed findings from the State Pathologist regarding the circumstances of death. The matter will return before the court at a later date.
