'I don’t care if he was running from here to Donegal': judge remands athlete in custody over €80k drugs haul

A 24-year-old Galway athlete has been remanded in custody following his guilty plea to drug possession charges at Galway Circuit Criminal Court. Richard Kamson, of Straith Fhada, Doughiska, admitted possessing cocaine and cannabis with intent to supply at locations in Doughiska and Merlin Woods on 14 September 2021. Gardaí recovered drugs valued at approximately €81,000 during a search of his home and nearby areas. The defendant had no previous convictions but is currently under garda investigation for other alleged offences. Judge Brian O'Callaghan rejected arguments regarding Kamson's sporting achievements and engagement with the Restorative Justice Programme, noting the defendant's recent adverse attention from gardaí contradicted claims of rehabilitation. The judge characterised the offence as serious and remanded Kamson in custody. Sentencing has been adjourned until 10 June.
