John Murphy, a 62-year-old retired Garda Superintendent, was sentenced to six and a half years imprisonment after pleading guilty to possession of cannabis resin worth €259,120 found at his home in Clontarf on September 29, 2021. Murphy had accumulated €855,000 in financial debts following poor business decisions and was consuming alcohol heavily on a daily basis. Judge Martin Nolan stated that Murphy, despite his 40 years of public service, should have known better and was holding the drugs for financial reward to alleviate his debts.
