Thief stole dozens of laptops he ordered with false ID
Summary
An English man, Mark Barber, 49, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for stealing 67 laptops from a Dublin technology company. In October 2014 he contacted the company, inquired about 98 laptops, and sent a purchase order for €675 each. When informed that only 67 were in stock, he accepted the partial shipment. Barber used a false identity to place the order and rented a premises on a three‑month lease under that name to receive the laptops. He pleaded guilty to theft at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 24 October 2010 and had 21 prior convictions in England. The company suffered a loss of just over €45,000. Judge Pauline Codd noted the planning involved and suspended the final two years of the sentence on strict conditions. The case was prosecuted by Fiona Murphy BL, with Detective Garda Kelly Dutton providing evidence.
