In a 2016 robbery at Core Credit Union in Ballybrack, Dublin, 28‑year‑old Gary Gregg, a heroin addict, seized the supervisor by the neck and threatened to set her on fire, claiming he had a lighter and fuel. He poured liquid from a canister over her head, shouted demands for money, and forced two staff members to hand over cash. The robbery lasted 41 seconds, during which Gregg also threw fluid over the counter and stole €12,241. The supervisor escaped through the front door, raising the alarm, while a woman with children fled the building. Neither the cash nor the fluid canister was recovered, and forensic evidence on the victim's cardigan evaporated. Gregg pleaded guilty to robbery and making a threat to kill, was sentenced in May 2017, and was ordered to undergo drug treatment. The incident left staff traumatized, with ongoing fear and nightmares.
