Coroner in Tom O'Gorman inquest asks judge for copy of trial transcript

Summary

The coroner, Dr Myra Cullinane, is conducting an inquest into the death of Tom O'Gorman, who was murdered by his lodger, Saverio Bellante, in January 2014. Bellante, aged 37 and originally from Palermo, was found not guilty by reason of insanity in July 2015 and has been detained indefinitely at the Central Mental Hospital in Dublin. On 3 April 2017, Paul Carroll SC, acting for the coroner, submitted an affidavit to Judge Margaret Heneghan requesting a copy of the trial transcript so the coroner could accurately assess the proceedings and determine whether to examine the state's treatment of Bellante. The judge will rule on the request on Friday. The inquest resumed in March after a previous adjournment, and the coroner's office has requested a broad scope for the inquiry.
