Sergeant accused of assaulting Corporal while serving in Lebanon

Summary

A military court heard on 3 April 2017 that Sergeant Martin Dougan was accused of assaulting Corporal Niall McShane on 9 March 2014 while both were serving with the Irish Defence Forces in Lebanon. The alleged assault involved Dougan striking McShane on the face. Dougan is also alleged to have been under the influence of an intoxicant on that day. Dougan pleaded not guilty. McShane recounted that the incident occurred after a night out in Naqoura where he and colleagues had been granted overnight leave. He described a confrontation with Dougan that escalated to an arm‑wrestling contest, after which Dougan allegedly struck him in the left eye. McShane was taken to an ambulance and later treated in hospitals in Naqoura and Beirut. Sergeant Bernard O'Reilly also gave evidence, describing McShane's condition upon arrival. The court martial is being heard before a board of officers and is scheduled to last all week.
