83-year-old father jailed for sexually abusing son
Summary
An 83‑year‑old father from Clare was convicted by a Central Criminal Court jury of three counts of indecent assault on his son at the family home between 1977 and 1979. The man, whose name is withheld to protect the victim's identity, had previously been convicted of sexual abuse of other family members, including a seven‑year sentence for rape and indecent assault of a niece and a four‑and‑a‑half‑year sentence for indecent assault of his daughters. In his victim impact statement he accused his father of stealing his childhood, education and life, saying he had never felt truly safe. Justice Deirdre Murphy, after reflecting on the case, imposed consecutive sentences totalling four years, noting that the maximum penalty available at the time of the offences was only two years and was not commensurate with the crime.
