"Danger to society" jailed for vicious unprovoked attack on sisters
Summary
A 19‑year‑old homeless teen, Kelly McAuley, pleaded guilty in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to two counts of assault causing harm after an unprovoked attack on sisters Kathleen (66) and Eileen (59) on South Anne's Street on 13 May 2016. McAuley struck Kathleen in the face and head, causing her to fall, and punched Eileen in the nose, drawing blood. The sisters were treated for facial fractures. McAuley was arrested later that day, was intoxicated and initially unfit for interview, but later accepted full responsibility and expressed remorse. She had 42 prior convictions, including theft, assault, criminal damage and drug misuse, and had been homeless since age 10. Judge Martin Nolan sentenced her to three years' imprisonment, with the final year suspended, describing her as a danger to society. The sentence was imposed on 29 June 2017.
