Mother of six jailed for trying to rob and threatening to bite cyclist
Summary
Michelle O'Leary, 33, of St Patrick's Court, Phibsborough, was sentenced to one year in prison for attempting to rob a woman's handbag while she was cycling home with groceries on 6 February 2016. O'Leary pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court and admitted she had been pressured by her then boyfriend, who had "clattered" her in the face, to carry out the offence. She had 39 prior convictions and a serious drug addiction. Judge Karen O'Connor had previously adjourned sentencing to check for a residential drug treatment bed, but none was available. The judge imposed a three‑year sentence, suspending the last two years on conditions, recognising O'Leary's remorse and efforts to reduce her methadone intake. The court was briefly disrupted by a supporter who shouted abuse at the judge before the proceedings resumed.
