Gardai had to produce firearms after father-of-three refused to get out of stolen car

Summary

In July 2017, Gardaí stopped a stolen vehicle in heavy traffic near St Margaret's, Dublin. The driver, Michael Boylan, 45, refused to exit when ordered, revving the car and endangering other road users. Officers opened the doors and, after Boylan's continued refusal, managed to free themselves and the vehicle. Boylan was later arrested at his home, where he was found hiding in a downstairs toilet. He pleaded guilty to driving a stolen car and reckless conduct at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. With 54 prior convictions, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison, to run consecutively with his current sentence, with the final 12 months suspended. The court noted his efforts to address drug addiction and his status as a model prisoner. The stolen vehicle was recovered and returned to its owner.
