Garda sent anonymous email while wearing wig and sunglasses, trial hears
Summary
During a trial for harassing a State solicitor, a Dublin garda, Eve Doherty, 49, was found to have worn a wig and sunglasses while sending anonymous emails from an internet café. The emails, sent between September 2011 and March 2013, targeted Elizabeth Howlin, a directing officer at the Director of Public Prosecutions, with slurs such as "corrupt bitch" and "incompetent useless hobbit." They also falsely claimed Howlin was a political appointee who would "pull" files to protect those connected to her or the Government. Evidence showed the emails originated from Hushmail addresses linked to the Wired café on Aungier Street. Doherty admitted she had received a document, added to it, and forwarded it to recipients at the Courts Service, the Financial Ombudsman and the Ombudsman. The trial is ongoing before Judge Melanie Greally and a jury.
