Garda harassment trial hears of literary feature "D.P.P"

Summary

In a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court hearing, Detective Sergeant Eve Doherty (49) denies harassing State solicitor Elizabeth Howlin between September 2011 and March 2013 and making false statements in March 2013 that Howlin was perverting the course of justice. Howlin, who worked with the Director of Public Prosecutions, received letters and emails over 18 months that called her a "corrupt bitch" and "incompetent useless hobbit," and claimed she was a political appointee who would "pull" files to protect those connected to her or the Government. The trial, presided over by Judge Melanie Greally, included testimony from civilian Garda Suzanne Lindsay, who identified 60 literary features common to the documents linked to Howlin and the defendant, and from Chief Superintendent John O'Driscoll, who confirmed that the author of the posts was the subject of three ongoing criminal investigations. The case remains before the jury.
