Jury to continue deliberating in former soldier's murder trial
Summary
A jury will return to the Central Criminal Court tomorrow to consider its verdict in the trial of former British Army soldier Donal Colgan, aged 66, who has pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter in the death of 44‑year‑old David Sheridan outside Luigi's chip shop on Dublin's North Strand Road on 17/18 August 2014. Colgan's plea was not accepted and he remains on trial. The jury heard evidence from witnesses present at the chip shop when the fatal stabbing occurred. Justice Tony Hunt instructed the jury to consider whether Colgan was provoked by Sheridan to the point of losing self‑control, which would support a manslaughter verdict, or whether the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt that he was not provoked and was in control, which would support a murder verdict.
