Jail for man caught dealing heroin from Kinder Surprise egg

Summary

Andras Szabo, 35, of North Circular Road, Dublin, was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment after pleading guilty to possession of heroin for sale or supply at his flat on 5 July 2016. Gardaí had suspected Szabo of drug dealing and, during a search, found a small "Kinder Surprise egg" box containing plastic bags of heroin, a weighing scale and €1,635 in cash. Szabo admitted keeping the drugs in the egg and that he had been dealing them for two weeks, claiming he was trying to earn money to send to his daughter in Hungary. He had two prior convictions for drug dealing in 2014, for which he received suspended jail sentences. The judge noted Szabo's previous employment record but also that he had been given earlier chances by the courts, which he did not take advantage of, and therefore a jail term was unavoidable.
