Boy (13) who sexually assaulted teen is sentenced to detention

Summary

A 13‑year‑old boy was sentenced to ten months' detention after sexually assaulting a 16‑year‑old girl in a public park. The incident occurred while the boy was with his uncle and cousin, who were described by Garda Timothy McCaul as bad influences and who had bullied and intoxicated him. The victim, who was distressed, offered to help the boy get a taxi; he then pushed her to the ground, assaulted her and fled. CCTV identified the boy, who was arrested and later pleaded guilty to sexual assault. He had no prior convictions and was described by his defence counsel as a child with a chaotic background and low maturity. Judge Martin Nolan, considering the boy's need for "normality," imposed the detention and ordered ten months of probation supervision thereafter.
